Destress your dog with CBD

Destress your dog with CBD

Our furry friends are sensitive creatures, and they may suffer from stress from occasional stress just like humans. Dogs love continuity and routine more than anything else. Eating, sleeping, walking and even bathroom times on a routine are when your pet is at his or her happiest. But our pets also live in our world and our world isn’t always routine. Upheavals like moving to a new home, a change in diet or even brand of food, visiting the vet or even missing a human family member or other household pet are all examples of incidents that might cause a dog stress. So how do we comfort our best buddy and bring about a sense of calm?

Read on for several ways that CBD can help destress your pet and bring down their anxiety levels.

How do I know if my dog is stressed?

Before you administer anything to your dog, it’s important to be able to pick up on signs of stress. Dogs cannot communicate with us using words, so we need to look to behavioral cues to diagnose their state of mind. Symptoms of anxiety in your dog include:

  • Trembling
  • Whimpering
  • Howling at the smallest sound
  • Panting excessively
  • Aggression
  • Urinating or defecating on the floor
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of energy

If your dog displays one of or any combination of these symptoms, something is likely wrong. As a first step it’s always a good idea to consult your vet to make sure there are no medical concerns that need treatment. Once you’re given the all clear, it may be a matter of your pup’s mood. In times like these there are several things you can do to calm them down, one of them being administering small doses of CBD. Here’s how you can safely give your dog CBD:

At night: Many dogs get anxious at night and some of them even struggle to lie down or get into a comfortable position. Giving your dog a little bit of CBD oil before bed can help them settle down and ensure they get a good night’s sleeps.

During thunderstorms:  We all know that dogs get stressed during thunderstorms. In addition to sitting with your pup or cuddling them, a few drops of CBD can help ease anxiety and reduce their primal fight or flight instinct in the moment.

When travelling: Nobody likes air travel, but your little pooch especially has no idea what’s going on. Engine noises can be particularly distressing because canine hearing is so sensitive. Giving your dog a few drops of CBD oil a couple of hours before boarding a flight can help get them calm and prepare them for the journey. It’s especially helpful if your dog can’t fly in the cabin with you. CBD can keep nerves at bay for the duration of a short or even long-haul flight.

General anxiety: Some of us may have anxious pups. You know the ones, who cling to you all day, follow you to every room and loose their marbles a little bit when you step out to take the garbage out? A CBD regimen might be a good idea for a dog who is prone to general anxiety.

Like humans, dogs have a sensitive endocannabinoid system (ECS). In fact, all mammals do. CBD can help keep the ECS in homeostasis and curb the instant “fight or flight” response. At Plant de Terra we offer a range of products that can help pet owners who are looking to start their precious pups on a CBD regimen. All our products are lab tested for complete transparency, we can provide those reports and are Farm Bill Compliant. Get in touch with us if you have questions about CBD for your canine companion.
